Project Name: Microgrids Without Borders: Resilience of Energy, Communication, and Transportation in Emergencies
Project Description:
Since 2012, CESI has been designing and supporting development of resilience for critical facilities and vulnerable populations. Beginning with support to the City of Wilmington, NC for its “Local Energy Assurance” Program, CESI has constructed parametric models and engineering designs for resilient communities anywhere.
For the nonprofit Climable.org, CESI provides engineering, economic modeling, and financing support to develop a new form of “virtual microgrid.” This design allows “islanding” of individual facilities upon any interruption of electric grid service, while combining all the facilities’ resources to maximize revenues in normal times. The result is assurance of heat, cooling, light, power, communications, and shared electric transportation in emergencies, financially sustained by optimized aggregation of values. Climable and CESI have identified twenty potential revenue streams and modeled their cash flows to assure cost-effectiveness.
